GOING AGAINST THE TIDE: THE STORY OF YANG BIN | ||||||||||||
| It's easy to say that suffering improves our personality, perhaps throwing a glance of compassion to the disabled person in front of us. Yang Bin is a physhically disabled young man. He is a full time employee of a department of a major company in Guangzhou; he is also a part time volunteer for Huiling. His story tells us that it is possible for a man to lead a normal life in spite of his disability. Yang Bin was born in 1978. Being a premature baby, in the hospital he could not receive the appropriate treatment. As a consequence, his brain was damaged. Ever since he was a child, his face, his movements and his way of communicating were different from the other people's actions. Some acquaintances of his mother advised her to get rid of him, but she and her husband become his strong supporters. To meet all his daily needs and to find the best care for the little Yang Bin was not enough for them. His mother insisted on sending him to school. His father taught him some tricks to write characters faster, but especially he urged him and his younger brother not to pursue fame and wealth but rather knowledge, the only asset that no one can steal. The school was the first "public" testing area for the child. The beginning was hard because the head-master was not convinced that Yang Bin could be put in a normal class, and when that happened, his class-mates teased him. The situation changed gradually because Yang Bin made himself liked and showed his potential. In 2001, he was able to complete high school. At this point, some friends suggested to him that he apply for a certificate of disability. The official response was that Yang Bin was not eligible because he was not blind, deaf or dumb, nor had he any broken arms or legs. Having finished his course of studies, he was not even able to be considered as mentally disabled. Not all people, however, think like that. To give just one incident. When the boy went and visited his grandmother in hospital, the patient proudly told the doctor that her grandson knew how to use a computer. The doctor replies coldly: "Is he able to type the keyboard with a finger?" In 2005, when Yang Bin completed his computer course, he got a certificate of disability. With it came the disappointment of the first job interview that failed. However, a major opportunity came unexpectedly. Yang Bin's mother workes at Mitsubishi Electric in Guangzhou. A manager of the company, Li Hui, saw the young man and asked about him. Noting that he could use the computer and had studied English, he proposed to Li Jian Qi, the head of the Finance Department, to give the young man a chance. Today, Yang Bin works in the Information System Section of the Company's Finance Department and, since 2004, spends much of his free time for Huiling as a volunteer. He is shy and smiling, and he has his own satisfactions and disappointments. He surprises foreigners by talking about history and current events in faraway countries, reflecting on similarities and differences with China. There are new goals in his future, but one has been reached: to become part of society with its opportunities and problems. |
