Compound 02’s Diary Entry— (Mentally Disabled Center)

Mentally Disabled Center
We are the mentally disabled living with our families, but it isn’t all that bright – there are some unrealized families plagued by financial difficulties, they can apply to live here for minimal charge. Huiling House Mothers can take care of, at most, six volunteers who in turn will help full families get used to their new life. Thus, these unrealized families, upon entering Huiling can find the support they need to cope with life’s unfair plan for them.

Day Activities Center
Organizing daytime activities, both indoors and outdoors, as well as other special events, the goal of these activities is helping Huiling residents grasp society’s meaning through the joint support of knowing friends and familiar faces. These activities include literary circles and library visits, musicals and dance, art, physical sports, computer technology, as well as other basic actions to get one through the day such as bathing and cooking. According to activity content and goal, some of these activities may take place at a grocery store, parks and gardens, and other land marked places. We, frequently, take notice of what society expects of us. We even help society by being temporary traffic police! We like to chat with people on the street, ride public transportation, sell newspapers, and even eat at restaurants – all like normal people!

What do we do?
Mentally disabled are like everyone else; they need the chance to further their intellectual and emotional development – it’s not just because society requires these basic skills from them, but it’s a need from within. They want to feel like everyone else. This includes helping these mentally disabled people find fitting livelihoods so they can financially provide for their own families. Beijing Huiling Mentally Disabled Center has provided for their residents the following jobs: document maintenance (photocopier, printer, name cards, etc), seamstress (embroidery and fashion), porcelain, packaging centers, restaurants, and household aunties.

Visiting families and door-to-door service
Families unable to reach the Huiling Community may be aided by specialized people as well as keeping those living in the community company. We are, at the same time, beginning a “Good Buddy” system; sending out kind-hearted volunteers to families to organize activities that may bring the families closer together.

Parents and Friends contacting Huiling
Families not only require items, but they yearn even more for heart-to-heart connection. Beijing Huiling Mentally Disabled Center has facilitated the communication and exchange between parents and friends from the outside, with those living on the inside. This is done through a special internet system that allows for development in technology as well as keeping in touch with those that matter.
